Frequently Asked Questions Answered By Sensei Bill Taylor
Q: “Will martial arts, karate, tae kwon do make my kid violent?”
No way! In fact, martial arts makes kids calmer and more respectful than ever. Martial arts always has been about peace, and it always will be.
Q: “Does my child face a risk for injury with martial arts, karate, tae kwon do?”
Our program is extremely safe. We have measures upon measures in place to insure that your child will stay safe, and have a great time. From stretching to warmups to very close supervision – we’ve got your child covered. Injuries do happen sometimes – but they’re quite rare.
Q: “Can my child still participate in martial arts, karate, tae kwon do if he/she is not athletic?”
Yes! In fact, martial arts is kind of a beacon of light for kids who just don’t fit into team sports. Kids who never could throw a ball well or run fast find that martial arts is accessible to them. It’s something they excel at, and as a result, their confidence soars.
Q: “Is martial arts, karate, tae kwon do fun for children?”
Absolutely! In fact, kids usually have to drag their parents to martial arts class – something parents are always shocked to see. We have our serious moments here where kids work and learn… but we have just as many moments where they goof off and have a blast!
Q: “Will martial arts, karate, tae kwon do improve my child’s confidence?”
Yes! Martial arts is a powerful source of confidence for kids. They practice hard and learn techniques in order to advance through the ranks. And as they advance, they fill with pride. After all, they’re the ones doing all the work – so they feel all of the accomplishment whenever they learn a new move… achieve a new belt… or get praise from their fellow students and instructors.
Q: “How old should my child be to start martial arts, karate, tae kwon do?”
Any age! Most kids range from 5 to teenagers, but we have kids who are younger, too. Classes are customized to suit children of different ages. A teenager receives very different treatment than a 6 year old, for example.
Q: “Is martial arts, karate, tae kwon do for boys only? Or can girls participate as well?”
Our martial arts classes have been, and always will be, for boys AND girls! Every class has a good blend of the two as well. In fact, girls often get the hang of it sooner than boys as they’re naturally more flexible.
Q: “Can martial arts cause injury?”
Because we place such a huge focus on safety and injury prevention, we’re proud to say that injuries are very few and far between with our program. In fact, because martial arts gets you in great shape, and makes you strong and flexible, people often see LESS injuries in their lives.
Q: “What level of fitness is required for martial arts?”
You’ll get in shape as you go. You don’t have to be in great shape to start.
The great thing about martial arts is you can be at any fitness level and do great. That’s because there’s no rush or pressure to do anything quickly. You can learn at your own pace.
If you have a knack for it, you can speed through techniques. If it’s a bit harder for you, take your time. All we care about is that you’re having fun, learning and progressing, and staying safe.
Q: “Is martial arts violent?”
No! Because self-defense technique is taught in martial arts, it’s often thought of as violent. However, the philosophies behind martial arts revolve around peace and harmony. The moves are more of a way to become connected with your body. We teach diplomacy and friendship. However, if a violent situation ever arises in your life, you’ll have powerful tools to defend yourself and your loved ones.
Q: “Will my class be in a group or 1-on-1?”
Most likely you’ll be in a group class. However we gladly offer private classes for those that are interested. Feel free to ask any of our instructors for more info on private classes!
Q: “How many other people will there be in my class?”
You can most likely expect 15-30, give or take a few depending on the day / time. We always make sure there are enough instructors no matter the class size though.
Q: “Are there other beginners in the classes?”
Yes, classes are full of people of all experience levels – including total beginners.
Q: “Do you offer any kind of help / guidance with nutrition and eating?”
We’ve researched deeply into nutrition to give all of our members powerful guidance – without making them start impossible-to-stick-to diets or anything of the sort.
Q: “Is this anything like “cardio kickboxing”?”
No! This is a completely different experience that’s very alive, interactive, and full of professional boxing equipment.
Q: “Will my classes help me get toned?”
Yes! We’ve designed our program to help you get lean & toned – no bones about it.
Q: “How many classes per week should I attend?”
We recommend at least 2-3 for best results, but we encourage you to listen to your body and attend how ever much is right for you.
